New Driver Suit Service Life - January, 2001
Effective January 1, 2001, SFI Specification 3.2A for Driver Suits requires a 5-year recertification period for SOME products. This new service life will apply only to suits certified with an SFI rating of 10, 15, or 20. The more common ratings of 1, 3, and 5 will continue to have no recertification period.
This revision to the SFI Spec was suggested and ultimately approved by the SFI Driver Suit Technical Committee, comprised primarily of driver suit manufacturers. Consumers can ensure that their suits continue to provide the required protection on an ongoing basis by sending in their suits to the manufacturer for inspection every 5 years. The manufacturer will inspect the garment for the consumer and if deemed suitable for continued use, will affix a new certification label with the inspection year on it. The garment certification will then be valid for an additional 5 years.
It is important to note that only the original manufacturer may recertify its own product, as is true under all SFI Specifications requiring a recertification period.
